| Review: I think you should let everyone reading this know my bias in favor of the film. I've seen twenty films as director Clint Eastwood and I liked most of them, and many of them love (my average rating of 7.9 from 28 films). But something felt off about Gran Torino based on the trailer. I read it as Eastwood wanted to be rude again, trying to be Dirty Harry again. Gran Torino is not. Walt Kowalski may have similarities with Dirty Harry, and could read them, perhaps, as a significantly larger version of Harry (a stretch), but is a character of his own mind, and identification goes far to say that one of Eastwoods best performances, and gives one the opportunity to show = int for a dramatic and comedic chops.Im not going to argue that Gran Torino is perfect supporting cast action ma , s young. It does not. In fact, some are downright nasty at times, but the film works in spite of its flaws. It is likely that the script was written with Eastwood in mind (I'm not sure of the details behind the scenes of this) and it shows. Perfectly captures Kowalski. The film is surprisingly funny, that is not being captured quite well in advertising. A totally hilarious at times (Kowalski tried to find the man of Thao teach him to speak as men), and Eastwood handles changes in tone brilliantly. When the film takes a dark turn towards the end I sat on the edge of my seat with suspension, fully aware of where he was going, but still mesmerized by Eastwoods direction tour-de -force. This is the main actor and artist or Gran Torino director.Whether can not be sustained as one of Eastwoods great movies keep coming, and the film feels like it would be good for several viewings. The characterization is strong and not at all simplistic, one could argue that Kowalski is just another war veteran irritable, but beautiful, functional eight Eastwoods nuanced and some neat little details in the film (especially towards the end) that I will not discuss in detail to avoid spoiling anything (and fun ndáirí back to see the film develops, Eastwood keeps the film moving at high speed related ) would prove you wrong. The film works on another level still image deconstruction of Eastwood. I do not mean that as a negative, it just adds to the strength study.Its films as a more personal character than Eastwoods film another movie this year, Changeling, and also smaller scale than many of his other films, but equally ambitious in many ways. This is not a politically correct film about racial grumpy old suddenly becoming more tolerant towards people around, it's a movie about a man who, near the end of life are forced to confront his demons, and the sunny side of a man who finds true friendship where you least expect. By the end of Gran Torino I excused any flaws you may have, and I was completely satisfied with the film, which was well above my expectations. I feel that Gran Torino, which has already received very positive reviews (but still being described as a minor Eastwood movie sharing), it will eventually become part especially important Eastwoods films. |
